"Inspired by All Things Vintage"

Tag Archives: chicago

One of the things, I treasure most with what I do is meeting extraordinary fashion designers and hearing the stories behind their collections.

Walking into Gus Mayer–just over a week ago–I never would have imagined meeting, much less interviewing Polish fashion designer Karolina Zmarlak, whose designs are worn by Karolina Kurkova, Jamie Anne Allman, Christina Milian–just to name a few.

As we sat and chatted about her latest collection, I began to love the clothes even more. Hearing the inspiration behind a collection directly from the designer makes the pieces more desirable…more unique…more glamorous! Oh, it was such a delight to meet and interview Karolina Zmarlak. I would not trade it for the world!

Karolina creates fashion pieces that exemplify history in ways that makes her collections intriguing and sophisticated. When slipping into a Karolina Zmarlak design, a woman instantly feels a powerful confidence that immediately shows on her face. “When women wear my designs, I want them to feel empowered. I want my pieces to bring confidence,” says Zmarlak.

When describing the captivating collections by Karolina Zmarlak, I cannot think of two better words than pure couture.

“Karolina Zmarlak is a Polish Ready-to-Wear designer who creates her clothing in  honor of the individual with pieces that are variable and expressive. Cutting new, exciting forms of clothing and taking the ideals of the made-to-measure process, her designs permit personalization through  the wearer’s ability to interact with the garment.  Karolina’s strong, enduring style results from subtraction cutting, playing with dimensions and shape, origami-based forms, and the clean lines of forward silhouettes.  A Gen Art Styles winner and FIT graduate, Zmarlak honed her skills during time spent at Carolina Herrera and Theory. Her first Ready-to-Wear collection was launched in the Fall of 2009.” (Karolina Zmarlak website)

  • Who or what inspired you to become a designer?

“I would say it stems from when I was young. Being born in Poland during Communist times, there was so little of everything. I first watched my mother find fabrics to have clothes made for her. These pieces were very different and unusual. I would say I carry that unique approach with my line today. When I was ten, I came to America and a world of possibilities was opened. I took my first sewing class in Chicago during high school–it was such a wow factor! I knew at that moment, that was what I wanted to do with my life.”

  • What inspired your Fall/Winter 2013 collection?

“The overall design was inspired by modernism and modern interiors. The color story is inspired by the deep tones and neutrals of the Dutch Golden Era paintings. The colors are not overpowering, and that’s why I like it.”

  • Do you have a favorite piece in your latest collection?

“As a designer, I pride myself in tailoring. I love all of my sculpted jackets. They remind me of the 1950s car coats because they were sculpted and feminine with a very modern appearance.”

  • Do you have a particular mantra that drives your designs?

“Less is more! I like for my designs to truly reflect specialty and sophistication. When I create a new collection, I do not like to follow a trend. I want women to wear my clothing and create their own trend or look.”

  • What does fashion mean to you?

“Fashion to me is when a woman feels empowered.  When she feels empowered, she feels like no one can stop her! The clothes a woman wears need to appeal to her and make her confident, and I believe that a great piece of clothing can do that.”

  • What is in your sketchbook?

“My sketchbook is a gathering of things from everyday life and my travels. The more things I collect, the more inspiration I feel. The world we live in is an ever evolving world of ideas that I want to express through my clothing.”

IMG_7857

  • What is your favorite fashion era and why?

“5os and 60s, of course! It was the era where Christian Dior and other designers started ready-to-wear luxury.”

  • VIP Question: What is one item in your closet you could never toss out and why?

“When I first moved to New York City, I made my very first designer purchase–menswear inspiring pants with a crop jacket. I could never toss the outfit out because it is very special and sentimental. It was my moment of transition from a girl into a woman. I began understanding the value of good quality clothing.”

Karolina Zmarlak designs capture a side of fashion I absolutely adore! You just put it on, and go out to conquer the day in completely marvelous style! Once again, all I can say is pure couture…pure couture…

Stay Fabulous,

Abby Hathorn

Step inside Trussville Antiques and Interiors (formally the Trussville Antique Mall) and surround yourself with the finest antiques and decor around town. This wonderful shopping heaven had the fortune of building upon something already remarkable. Trussville Antiques and Interiors can match any home interior style from Shabby Chic to Victorian to eclectic modern!

I have recently attended the grand reopening of Trussville Antiques and Interiors, and it was oh, so fabulous! There I met and interviewed vendors, entered for door prizes, and searched for vintage clothes! Trussville Antiques and Interiors has such a variety of things for sale that you can find almost anything you want or need! You can take guitar lessons at Mark’s Guitars, purchase adorable vintage clothes at the Pink Porch, find yourself adorable handmade artwork at the Lolly Molly, or get a little something for the kids at Babee B Poshe!

In Part 1 of the Trussville Antiques and Interiors Reopening blog, I will be including some pictures along with interviews with vendors. In part two, there will be lots of pictures that capture the splendid things you can find at Trussville Antiques and Interiors!

I interviewed Bradley Leonard who is the owner of The Fabric House located in Trussville Antiques and Interiors. At the Fabric House you will find afforable, super stylish fabric that is great for all your crafting and decor needs! Bradley has such a variety of indoor, outdoor, and special order fabrics for sale in her shop.

Don’t you just love these special order fabrics from The Fabric House!

I asked Bradley what made her want to open up a fabric shop in Trussville, and she said that she has always been interested in decorating, and Kirk (owner of Trussville Antiques and Interiors) thought it was a great idea and the perfect time. “I am always helping my friends decorate,” Bradley says.

Mrs. Leonard said that she gathers most of her inspiration from magazines like Southern Living and other home decor magazines. She also finds inspirations from bright colors…who doesn’t love bright colors!

Bradley gave me two great tips that are true for the home and closet!

  • “It is your home, and if you like it, don’t let anyone influence your decisions.”
  • “If you aren’t sure about it in the store, then you will hate it when you get it home.”

Next, I visited Babee B Poshe to interview Brittney Malchus. At Babee B Poshe, you can find the perfect gift for the expecting mother, an adorable onesie for a cute little baby, or a shabby chic picture frame to hold your favorite baby memories! Brittney’s shop has so many adorable things that you will just have to see it for yourself at Trussville Antiques and Interiors!

I asked Brittney what made her want to open her shop, and Brittney stated that she wanted to be able to find cute things for her niece and friends that are expecting or have small children.

Brittney said that she was mainly inspired by Pinterest and stated, “…get inspiration from magazines and Pinterest, but make it your own!”

I dropped by Bill and Madeleine Laskoski’s shop to see what all they had to offer…and let me tell you guys, they have a little bit of everything! Bill, a retired school teacher, is like a mini picker! He told me that since he retired, he needed something to do…so he decided to open up his shop.

Bill and Madeleine refinish trunks (as seen in the picture above) to their original glory! It is quite a tedious project, but the finishing product looks marvelous! If I had somewhere to put one of their fabulous trunks, I would definitely pick one up for myself!

Bill is originally from the New England area, and when he returns home to visit, he stops by garage and yard sales in search of a good bargain!

I had such a great time chatting and getting to know Bill and Madeleine Laskoski at the reopening of Trussville Antiques and Interiors!

As I walked around the store in search of vendors to interview, I dropped by Kenny Lind’s shop. He is quite the adorable, humorous old man!

I asked Mr. Kenny why he decided to open his shop, and he said jokingly, “I got tired of chasing girls, so I went to work.” He also stated, “It’s a labor of love, not work.”

Kenny Lind was a golf pro all over the country and has helped in the building and designing of three golf courses. He designed and supervised the building of the Cumberland course.

The coolest things he has for sale in his shop are Roman coins, silver, and $1,000 coins!  He also sells other types of coins, antiques, and comics!

I stumbled upon this funky arrangement of antiques as I wandered from room to room at the grand reopening.

When I ran into the owner, I just had to ask Mr. Kirk Cornelious what made him want to open up Trussville Antiques and Interiors. He said that he bought the building and thought the concept of an antique mall in Trussville would be beneficial to everyone. Mr. Cornelious and his friends run Trussville Antiques and Interiors together. Over the years, Mr. Kirk Cornelious has developed a love for antiques.

I dropped by Jo Ann Lawrence and Lauren Taylor’s (daughter) shop which sells antiques and handmade goodies that Lauren makes herself.

Jo Ann and Lauren told me that they are big into “Go Green”, antiques, and upcycling. Jo Ann loves the feeling of a satisfied customer who finds a treasure in her shop that makes him/her happy. Jo Ann Lawrence has a deep crush for old things and antique kitchenware. “I was always baking and being in the kitchen with my grandmother,” says Jo Ann.

Phyllis Mitchell is the owner of Decor by Phyllis. In her shop, you can find fabulous decor items such as industrial kitchen lights and adorable chairs in various styles.

She decided to open her shop in Trussville because it was closer to home. Phyllis stated, “I love to buy, but I can’t keep everything I buy! I also love picking out and pairing colors together.”

I asked Mrs. Mitchell what inspires her, and she said, “I take what I like and go from there!”

Mrs. Mitchell has some of her decor gems for sale at the Springville Antique Mall in Springville, Alabama.

"VENI VIDI VICI" (in thrift store language that's "I SAW IT, I BOUGHT IT, I'M WEARING IT LIKE A SUPERMODEL"

Are you guilty of buying something from a thrift store then getting it home and not knowing what to do with it? So you stick it in the back of your closet with all of those Christmas sweaters your grandmother made you… Go get out those thrift store finds and be prepared to be amazed with what kind of wardrobe you can create for yourself! Vintage inspired here we come!

Amberle Rogers, V.I.P. guest model, wearing an Urban Outfitters sweater, Jessica Simpson shoes, and THRIFT STORE FIND skirt.

Thrift stores, consignment shops, and vintage stores are great places to find unique things that you may not find anywhere else nowadays. If you’re a newbie to all of this, don’t worry! I will explain to you in a future blog how to go about purchasing the perfect second-hand outfit with just a little bit of cash! In the meantime…you are just going to have to trust me when I say they are great places to uncover newfangled treasures!

The skirt was found at the Salvation Army in Starkville, Mississippi. I chose this skirt because of its magnificent navy blue color, and its great vintage lines!

On my latest escapade (Come on baby let’s get away, let’s save your troubles for another day…Es-ca-pade, We’ll have a good time. Es-ca-pade, leave your worries behind, Es-ca-pade…that’s all the words I know to that Janet Jackson song…anyway…) to the Salvation Army I saw…this glorious sign…that read…BAG SALE: all you can fit, $7.00. At that exact moment, I honestly thought I was going to get “weak knees” and fall to the ground because I was so steeped with excitement. This girl knows how to pack stuff!

Amberle Rogers wearing her own jeans, Urban Outfitters shoes, Anthropologie shirt (from many years ago), and THRIFT STORE FIND cardigan.

love the colors and the patterns of this sweater.

These pictures were taken out and about in rural Mississippi. Some of my favorite places to take pictures are at old barns, decaying houses, and winding dirt roads. My dad being involved with photography inspired me to get a fancy smancy camera and try it out for myself! Now, I am voracious about the artistic stand point behind photography!

V.I.P. guest model wearing a Chicago Symphony sweatshirt discovered at the Salvation Army. The shorts are my own creation...made from old jeans and added patches cut out of fabric from the 70s.

Amberle (on left) wearing a Michigan sweatshirt found at the Salvation Army and her own jeans. Abby Hat...aka me... (on right) wearing a found sweatshirt from the same Salvation Army. In a future DIY blog, I will let you in on my secrets to creating "roughed up, rock 'n' roll" sweatshirts!

The following photos are some of my favorites from the Thrift Store Finds photoshoot with Amberle Rogers! I just had to share them with all of you because Amberle and I had such a great time taking all these pictures! Tune in next time for my blog about the Birmingham Fashion Week 2012 (BFW) that I will be attending Thursday, February 9! Can’t wait to share my experience with you all!
