Summer Slouch Series: Outfit One

Maybe it is just me, but I have noticed that the trending ensemble for summer activities is a t-shirt, Nike shorts, and sandals. Here, in Birmingham, you will see LOTS of teenagers sporting the oversized pocket tees, Nike shorts, and Chacos with their hair and makeup fixed perfectly.  No, I am not bashing the fashion. Every girl needs their “play” clothes–even fashionistas like me!  Whenever I make a quick run to Target, you will most likely see me in Nike running shorts, a t-shirt, my lovely green Chacos, and a messy top bun or side pony tail–there you go, paparazzi.  Now, you know where to snap a picture of me when I am not all dolled up.  You’re welcome.

Now don’t get me wrong…I am all about being comfortable, but I cannot resort to wearing my hair down, with full-fledged makeup… and then tossing on athletic shorts and an old t-shirt…hmm…how can I feel comfortable and look amazing at the same time?  Two words.  Summer Slouch.

What is Summer Slouch, you ask?  Well, it is quite simple.  Rather than slipping on Nike shorts and a Joe’s Crab Shack tee, you can toss on a cute and colorful mini skirt paired with a graphic tee and snazzy sneakers for a look that is far more dazzling!  That is what Summer Slouch is all about–quick, easy, comfortable, and super spectacularly stylish.

Whether you are having an all-day girls-day shopping all over the city OR whether you are going for a picnic at the local botanical gardens with that cute guy you met at the beach OR whatever the occasion…the VIP Summer Slouch will keep you feeling comfy and looking too-hot-to-handle.  Now, enough chatting and explaining and thinking about meeting a hot guy at the beach, let’s see what cute combo is going to kick off the VIP Summer Slouch Series. Woo hoo!

Oh, Mighty Blues and Solitude

This Urban Outfitters skirt is the one I found in the drawer with my DVD player and broken crayons when I cleansed my closet and soul; indeed, it is uber spectacular!

“You know my starter won’t start this mornin’. Boy, my motor won’t even turn. You know my starter won’t start this mornin’. Boy, my motor won’t even turn…..” Man….the Blues is just some amazing music with an interesting history! One of my favorite Blues singers is Lightnin’ Hopkins-that man could sing, buddy! If you don’t listen to the Blues, you should really start…it’s such a relaxing style of music not like all this new fangled techno stuff people are listening to these days…now I sound like my grandparents…Oh, help me… haha;)

Here is a link to one of my favorite Blues songs by Lightnin’ Hopkins! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3SXKLas-ko

I have recently been reading Walden by Thoreau….it is both thought provoking and inspiring!

VIP Recommendation:

  • read the masterpiece Walden because it will encourage you to cleanse your closet and cleanse your soul!

However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man’s abode...” (from “Conclusion” chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

We are wont to forget that the sun looks on our culivated fields and on the prairies and forests without distinction. They all reflect and absorb his rays alike, and the former make but a small part of the glorious picture which he beholds in his daily course. In his view the earth is all equally cultivated like a garden. Therefore we should receive the benefit of his light and heat with a corresponding trust and magnanimity…(from “The Bean-Field” chapter in Walden)…Nature is as welladapted to our weakness as to our strength…none of the brute creation requires more than Food and Shelter. The necessaries of life for man in this climate may, accurately enough, be distributed under the several heads of Food, Shelter, Clothing, and Fuel; for not till we have secured these are we prepared to entertain the true problems of life with freedom and a prospect of success…” (from “Economy” chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

“Let every one mind his own business, and endeavor to be what he was made. Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises? If  a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” (from “Conclusion” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

“It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark…and we’re wearing sunglasses.” “Hit it.” -The Blues Brothers

“It’s 725 miles to Chicago, it’s going to take two and a half tanks of gas, a case of Diet Pepsi, a bag of Doritos, and a Twix…and I’m wearing my sunglasses my dog chewed on…”-The V.I.P.

“Our  village life would stagnate if it were not for the unexplored forests and meadows which surround it. We need the tonic of wildness,– to wade sometimes in marshes where the bittern and the meadow-hen lurk, and hear the booming of the snipe; to smell the whispering sedge where only some wilder and more solitary fowl builds her nest, and the mink crawls with its belly close to the ground. At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be infinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough Nature.” ( from “Spring” a chapter in Walden” -Henry David Thoreau

“There is a commonly sufficient space about us. Our horizon is never quite at our elbows. The thick wood is not just as out door, nor the pond, but somewhat is always clearing, familiar and worn by us, appropriated and fenced in some way, and reclaimed from Nature. For what reason have I this vast range and circuit, some square miles of unfrequented forest, for my privacy, abandoned to me by men?…I have my horizon bounded by woods all to myself…There can be no very black melancholy to him who lives in the midst of Nature and has his senses still…I have never felt lonesome, or in the least oppressed by the sense of solitude…” (from “Solitude” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived…” (from “What I Lived For” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

“I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be.” (from “Economy” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

Walden, The Blues, and denim…could it get any better! After reading Walden, I was inspired to share how much the captivating words of Thoreau affected me! It brought forth the idea of my last blog, “Cleanse the Closet, Cleanse the Soul” and the idea for this blog, “Oh, Mighty Blues and Solitude”.

  • Denim is one of those pieces that never goes out of style…like the little black dress! Every girl should own at least one pair of superbly fabulous blue jeans and a statement denim jacket or vest!

The following are additional pictures from the “Oh, Mighty Blues and Solitude” photoshoot!

“I should not talk so much about myself is there were anybody else whom I knew as well. Unfortunately, I am confined to this theme by narrowness of my experience…” (from “Economy” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say let your affairs be as two or three, not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb nail…Simplify, simplify…instead of a hundred dishes, five; and reduce other things in proportion…” (from “What I Lived For” a chapter in Walden) -Henry David Thoreau
