Last night, my fabulous friend Montess Burt of MLBe Talent put on a spring fashion experience at the East Tennessee State University D.P. Culp Ballroom called The Playoffs, sponsored by the ETSU Black Affairs Association. Featuring hot name brands like Buckle, Victoria’s Secret, Charlotte Russe, and JCPenney and independent designers such as Jones’n (Chicago, IL), Tom Edna, Orshads Customs, and FaceLife–The Playoffs was an unforgettable runway show that rocked Johnson City, Tennessee!
The creator of the fashion show Montess Burt has put together nine runways over the past few years, and he is currently working on establishing his talent agency, MLBe Talent. During the final walk at the show, Montess stated, “Y’all know what I say about fashion–It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it….MLBe is my initials; however, the ‘Be’ at the end is all about how you can ‘Be’ anything. And that’s one thing I really try to tell people when it comes to expression and fashion and talent.”
During my time at Northeast State, I have gotten to know Montess well, and he is such an inspirational person with a burning passion inside his heart. He is always pursuing and achieving big dreams and goals. Congrats on an amazing show, Monie!

The Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and Belk at The Summit hosted their annual fashion show fundraiser Saturday, November 16, 2013. This fantastic fashion show was a sold out event with 350 guests attending. Belk has sponsored this fabulous annual event for five years, and this fashion fundraiser is the signature event for the Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
What is Jack and Jill America?
Jack and Jill is a national mother’s civic organization with the focus of providing cultural, educational, leadership and social opportunities for African American children. Strong emphasis is placed upon community service and civic responsibility.
What is the Jack and Jill Fashion Show Fundraiser?
Each year, two local charities are awarded the proceeds generated from the event ticket sales. This year’s recipients were Leading Edge Institute and Grace House. Much preparation went into bringing a wonderful morning of elegant fashion, food, and fun to the Jack and Jill mothers and their guests.
The Jack and Jill special event committee members Karla Fields, Bonika Wilson, Ty Davis, Terri Gardner, Vickie Ausmer, and Michelle Nalls worked closely with Belk at The Summit Store Manager Susan Held, Belk Special Events Coordinator Katie Jones, and Fashion Stylist Melissa Melvin to make the event truly special.
A special highlight of the morning was the Jack and Jill teen models that walked the runway with the professional models. Malik Kofi was the featured musical guest, and Chef Julia May provided an elegant continental breakfast.
Now, without further ado, here are some fabulous fashion highlights from the Annual Jack and Jill of America Birmingham Chapter Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser at Belk the Summit! Enjoy!

As the sun sets in Homewood Alabama, my fashion senses are tingling with excitement! Everyone in the crowd is ready to see hot summer fashions from The Clothes Tree INC. and Gus Mayer styled by Southern Femme, makeup by Gus Mayer cosmetics team, and spectacular hair by Joelle Salon all being modeled poolside at The Hill for the Sunset in Miami fashion show.
Sunset in Miami is unlike any other fashion show in the Birmingham area because it captures the true essence of trend-setting fashions for a great cause—P.A.W.S. for Autism, which is a charity organization designed to bring service dogs to children faced with the troubles of autism. This wonderful local non-profit was started by the beautiful Miss Alabama 2012 winner, Anna Laura Bryan at age sixteen.
