Weekly Whistle: Spooktacular Halloween Mash Up

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re the Addams Family.  Their house is a museum.  Where people come to see ‘em.  They really are a scream.  The Addams family.  So get a witches shawl on.  A broomstick you can crawl on.  We’re gonna pay a call on The Addams Family.”  What a spooktacular song to totally get us in the mood for Halloween.  Oh, Halloween-the buckets full of candy and treats, the haunted houses, and last, but not least, the costumes!  Speaking of Halloween and costumes—this week on The Adventures of the VIP, I am going to show you how to dress for all your jack-o’-lantern, boo-tastic festivities-whether or not the invite says to wear a costume. Now, let’s hop on our brooms and zoom into fantastic outfits!  Zoom, zoom, zoom, on my broom, broom, broom!

Top: Deep South Pout
Pants: Deep South Pout
Shoes: BCBG
Necklace and Earrings (see photo below for a closer look): Hearts of Stone Jewelry by Rachel Leathers www.hrtsofstone.etsy.com

Monster mash your way into an ensemble of marvelous Halloween spirit—a flowy, pumpkin orange blouse pairs perfectly with jet-black chiffon trousers! Spice up this ensemble with monochromatic jewelry in funky shapes.  This outfit works fabulously for a Halloween dance party, family gathering, passing out treats, or even to fall festivals and bazaars!  It is so easy to dress to impress this Halloween season without the costume!

Top: TJMaxx (Trussville, Alabama)
Pants: Deep South Pout
Shoes: BCBG

“Bewitched, bewitched, you’ve got me in your spell. Bewitched, bewitched, you know your craft so well…you witch, you witch, one thing that’s for sure.” Embrace your good witch side-wear a pitch black top with to-die-for black chiffon pants, a sparkly statement necklace, and a pointy witch hat for a quick Halloween costume that will have you looking like a spectacular glamour witch! Bewitched, Be-glamour-witched!

VIP Tips on Dressing for Halloween:

  1. No Costume Needed:  Work those lovely autumn and Halloween colors into your wardrobe to create instant ensembles that express your love for the season!  You can never go wrong with anything black, sequined, or orange!  By using these essentials, there is no need to hide behind a costume!
  2. Quick! I Need a Costume!:  Are you in a hurry and  need a Halloween costume in a dash?  No fear, my lovely fashionista!  Grab your mom’s clothes from the 80s, tease that hair, and slide into some neon stilettos! Create a totally awesome look in a snap, or should I say in a tease…or two!
  3. Be-Glamour-Witched:   If you are looking for a cute witch costume, search within your own closet!  Pair a simple pair of black pants with an oversized or sheer flowy black top, a black dazzling statement necklace—and don’t forget the pointy witch hat and broom!  This ensemble will make you the wickedly fabulous witch of the party rather than the wicked witch of the west!
  4. Disco Diva:  Dressing as a disco diva is an easy and vintage approach on mashing up your Halloween spirit!  Head on over to your local vintage shop, thrift store, or even shop within your parents closet!  I can see it now- everyone boogying the night away in retro disco suits and platform heels…staying alive, staying alive, I got Saturday night fever!
  5. Let’s hear it for the Boys:  My dear sweet boys, a classic and super attractive Halloween costume is to go as a Grease character!  Put on your leather jackets, slick back that hair, and practice your singing!  This Halloween ensemble will have the girls screaming, “Let’s hear it for the boys”!

“He did the mash. He did the monster mash. The monster mash.  It was a graveyard smash.”  I am going to monster mash my way to Halloween festivities-so tah tah for now, my lovelies!  Have a candy-filled and spooktacularly fashionable Halloween!  I did the mash. I did the monster mash. The monster mash!

Let’s start this interview, shall we? I know y’all are dying to hear it!

1.  Tell us a little something about yourselves.

We (Shannon and Nicole) met in high school in Petal, Mississippi. We
re-connected at a high school reunion two years ago.

Shannon was a school teacher, and now lives in Starkville with her husband and son, Charley.  Nicole and her husband, Justin, live in Columbus with their two puppies. Before Deep South Pout, Nicole worked in corporate retail for several years.

2.  What inspired the name “Deep South Pout”?

When I (Nicole) was working at another boutique (before DSP), we went to New York City for market one weekend. I was amazed at how we Southern women stood out from the crowd. I wanted to incorporate that and to stay true to our roots. That’s where Deep South came from! And being from the Deep South, like most good Southern women, we wear lots of makeup ;) And “Pout” relating to your mouth, just made sense.

Check out this super cute outfit at Deep South Pout in Starkville, MS! Oh, how I am loving those patterned shorts!

3.  Describe Deep South Pout in five words.

Southern, Trendy, Affordable, Fun, & Unique.

4.  What influences Deep South Pout’s style?

We love the TV reality show Junk Gypsy (http://www.hgtv.com/junk-gypsies/show/index.html). We love how they find someone else’s junk and turn it into treasure!

5.  How is Deep South Pout involved with the community?

We love to give back to our community and to get involved with charity projects for those in need. One way we are doing this is by helping a local family fund their adoption of a little boy from Ethiopia. A percentage of our sales each month go toward their adoption fund. We love being able to support a good cause!

What a splendid, shabby glam display case for colorful tops at the Columbus location!

6. What are the top must-haves for fall at Deep South Pout?

We are so excited about our new fall trends! Check out our own blog post about it.  Visit  http://blog.deepsouthpout.com/?p=253 .

7. What is the one item in your closet you would never throw out?

My leopard print flats. Convenient, yet stylish!

It is jewelry heaven at both Deep South Pout locations! We girls love our accessories!

8. What is an easy “go-to” item to spice up any casual outfit effortlessly?

We love to throw on a blazer over jeans and basic t-shirt for an instant outfit upgrade! They are perfect for fall and come in lots of different colors and styles!

Boots, high heels, and stunning flats-oh, my! Which is a fashionista to choose! I’ll take one of each in a size eight, please and thank you! :)

Walk Like an Egyptian

I am attracted to sparkly things as a moth is to a flame! I wonder why moths are attracted to flames? I am going to go research that before I forget.  Here we go.  According to www.earthsky.org, “Scientists think moths aren’t so much ‘attracted’ to the light of a flame as they are disoriented by it.” Well, that explains why I buy so many vintage sparkly tops.  I am disorientated by their luster!

Fascination and admiration for shiny, sparkly things is nothing new-not even vintage or antique, but ancient! Hop in the VIP’s time machine and travel back to the times of pharaohs, kings, queens, and gypsies.

How would we define sequins?  Would we say that they are tiny pieces of shimmering plastic used on wedding gowns and prom dresses?  To fully understand the meaning of sequins, we have to take a look at their history. Sequins date back all the way to Ancient Egyptian times.  “Blonde waitresses take their trays. They spin around and they cross the floor; they got the moves. You drop your drink then they bring you more. Walk like an Egyptian, Walk like an Egyptian, Walk like an Egyptian, la la la words I don’t know, walk like an Egyptian….”  I could not resist singing and dancing that catchy tune!  I digress.  Egyptians drilled small holes into their coins and attached them to their clothing to represent wealth.  This ancient adornment was not just for the living.  “Archaeologists have found mummified pharaohs wrapped in sequined cloth,” says www.worldette.com.

Sequins were used in centuries past to bedazzle the clothing of royalty and the rich as a sign of power and prosperity.  There were some kings and queens who had “sequins” made from super thin gold discs, and even traveling gypsies embellished their clothing with gold coins to show off their wealth.  Talk about a statement ensemble! I would love to have a real gold sequined outfit.  I bet it would be a bit heavy and uncomfortable.  I am thinking that it would be dry clean only.  My apologies, back to our little fashion history lesson.

A variety of vintage garments had “sequins” made of pearls, metals, crystals, celluloid or other early period plastics. When the 1940s approached, a substance called “gelatine” was discovered. Gelatine was used to create sequins; however, soon after the invention, it was discovered that gelatine sequins could not be near heat or water.  Talk about a “one-night-stand” garment!  Manufacturers stopped producing these fashion disaster bedazzlements pretty quickly after discovering that they would not hold up to real life situations.

Sequins did not stop there, but enough about that!  I encourage each of you to do a little fashion research on sequins.  Now, it’s time for VIP tips on how to wear vintage and modern sequined garments!

VIP Tips on How to Wear Sequins:

  1. Sequins and Denim:  First, go shopping for a vintage cocktail blouse, or go to the back of your closet and find one, and pair it with dark denim straight leg jeans for a “wear it anywhere” look.  To take this ensemble to the next level, roll up your jeans and pair with neutral or black stilettos. Let the blouse do all the talking!
  2. Sequins and Black:  Pick yourself up ANOTHER vintage sequined top (because a girl can never have too many!) and pair it with black. Wear it with a frilly black skirt or black trousers, or even wear it over a little black dress! Black is the perfect hue to make those sequins sparkle!
  3. Layering with Sequins:  Layer a modern, short-sleeved, sequined sheer top over a solid colored, long-sleeved blouse to create a mesmerizing “work-to-play” ensemble.  For added drama, look for a blouse and skirt combination in the exact same hue.
  4. Let the Sequins Do the Talking:  When wearing sequins, keep your jewelry to a minimum.  Diamond stud earrings, a few silver or gold bangles, and a statement ring are all that is needed.  The sequins deliver all the impact so feel free to go sans jewelry.
  5. Sequined Accessories NEVER EVER wear sequined accessories with a sequined garment.  I am all about self-expression, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing!   Sequined accessories such as headbands or belts pair well with iconic denim.

Sequins aren’t just for proms, weddings, and trips to New Orleans. Their stellar personality deserves to shine all the time- day or night, winter, spring, summer, and especially fall.

Pigskin Go Team Ready!

Can you feel it?  The spirit is in the air!  Pep rallies and tailgating-crowds cheering and cowbells ringing-Oh, my goodness!  I am so pumped to get dolled up in school colors and attend the first game of the season.  The VIP will be sporting sheer tops, wide-leg trousers, flirty dresses, cute cardigans, and team-colored accessories this football season.  Please join me, my sports loving, team supporting fashionistas, on this school spirit fashion adventure as I demonstrate how to dress comfortable and GO TEAM adorable!

Putting together a savvy, team-spirited outfit can be tricky-unless you are one of those guys that paint your chests with various team colors and letters.  Then dressing for the game is rather simple and no doubt messy; however, I am no expert on body painting, and it may be rather complicated and time consuming.  Don’t you just get a chuckle when you see those guys standing in the wrong order-all the letters out-of-sorts-bless!  I digress.

For all the red, white, and blue team out there, I have put together an outfit dedicated to you!   The tricky thing about red, white, and blue is not looking too patriotic or American “flagish”.  An easy way to maneuver past this is wearing wide-leg blue trousers and a sheer white blouse with a red spaghetti tank underneath.  Don’t forget the accessories!   Red high heels and a red beaded statement necklace will add a little bit of spice and not July 4th to this outfit!

Maroon and white fans, I have a little something special for you.   The trick to carrying off maroon and white or crimson and white is embracing a solid and punching it up with the right accessories.  I chose to add spirit to a short in the front, long in the back maroon dress by piling on a mix of black and pearl necklaces and adding a charming bracelet in those same colors.  Don’t forget the importance of a darling shoe!  White patent wedges are the perfect choice to carry this cowbell ringing outfit from pep rally to a 5th Quarter party!

The VIP Spirit Tips:

For football fans who want to dress fabulously while cheering on your favorite team, these VIP spirit tips are just the ticket for you.  Take a look at these tips to see how you can wear team colors with some fashionista VIP flare!

  • Go Sheer!:   Sheer tops are super easy to spice up by simply adding a team colored tank top underneath for a peek-a-boo effect that screams GO TEAM!
  • Go Patterns!:  Mix those patterns, my fashionista fans! Combine a two-toned striped cardigan with a polka dot dress for a VIP outfit that will surely win the victory! GO, GO PATTERNS, GO!
  • Go Solids!:   Let’s hear it for solids! Solids are the quarterback of football season fashion.  Paired with the right accessories, your superstar solid will lead you to a fabulous fashion touchdown.
  • Go Accessories!:  Accessories are the cheerleaders of every fashionista’s game-time wardrobe. They add the right spunk and glam to everything from a cute dress to jeans and a plain, white T-shirt.  ACCESSORIES ARE RED HOT, ACCESSORIES ARE RED HOT, ACCESSORIES ARE R-E-D, RED, H-O-T, HOT, RED HOT FAB THAT CAN’T BE STOPPED!
  • Go Guys with Body Paint!:  I have no advice…because well, as stated earlier, I am no expert on spirit body painting.  GO GUYS WITH BODY PAINT!
For all you ‘Bama fans out there-this is for you! Wrap yourself in houndstooth and crimson as you yell ROLL TIDE!

War Eagle, Hail State, Hotty Toddy, Roll Tide, Geaux Tigers, Go Patriots, DEFENSE, Go Dawgs, fight, fight, fight, V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all for VIP, stand up and holler!  Oh, there I go again.

Anyway, my game ready ladies and gents, grab your cowbells, pom poms, heels, or body paint and support your favorite team this year…while looking VIP FABULOUS!
