Reminiscing 2012

Welcome back, fashionistas! Lately, I have been thinking about how far the VIP has come… I started my blog 11 months ago! Wow…it seems like just yesterday I was learning how to blog!

From Vintage Inspired Passionista, I gained the opportunity to write a weekly fashion column for The Real Story newspaper called “The Adventures of the VIP”.  In October, I was featured in Town and Gown Magazine.  I also worked as a stylist for the December and January issues of  Town and Gown Magazine.  I look forward to seeing what other amazing opportunities God has to offer me as I continue my journey!

Now,  let us reminisce with some of my favorite pictures!

VIP DIY: VIP Glamour Heels

“Living in a material world, and I am a material girl. You know that we are living in a material world, and I am a material girl”…Oh, hey readers! I guess y’all are wondering why I was just singing “Material Girl” by the music icon Madonna? Let me tell you a little story about the most divine pair of vibrant pink heels by Madonna’s clothing line “Material Girl”. I purchased them for the spectacular price of $10.00 at TJMaxx in Trussville, Alabama. Due to the fabulous price and good times that I have had in my “Material Girl” heels, I just could not convince myself to throw them out or donate them. So what did I decide to do, you ask?  Well, I rescued them! I turned my toe-nicked, well-worn heels into totally revamped VIP Glamour Heels!

Top: JCrew
Skirt: TJMaxx
Shoes: VIP DIY

It is time now for a little, quick DIY on how to create VIP Glamour Heels!  Grab 220 grit (very fine) sandpaper, a leather puncher (I have read and seen where some crafters have used a paper hole puncher), decoupage glue, a clear spray (such as ModPodge Matte or Glossy Clear Acrylic Sealer), and a pair of scuffed up heels, and hop in my VW Bug with me and join me on a fabulous journey of crafting your own VIP Glamour Heels!

Starting out, lightly sand each shoe all over. To add more “nicks and scratches”, sand more vigorously-this will give your shoes a shabby chic, yet glamorous “distressed” look. Please trust me on this one.  I promise the outcome is going to be fabulous!  After sanding, punch holes for laces (following the pattern of a classic tennis shoe) being sure to align each hole correctly; otherwise, you will have some not so stellar VIP Glamour Heels.  If you are a daring fashionista, feel free to add texture by applying decoupage glue and lightly adhering scrap fabric to the shoe.  Do not worry about being neat in this step-just apply glue and stick.   Let the glue and fabric dry for approximately ten minutes and then slowly peel off the fabric. This technique will leave your shoes looking slightly texturized and fabulous! Once the desired distressed and textured look is achieved, spray an even coat of sealant (following the instructions on the can) on each shoe.  Once you have sanded, punched holes, added texture (if desired), and sealed, it is time to add some darling ribbon for laces!  TAH DAH! Now you have fabulously made VIP Glamour Heels!

Dear VIP, how do I wear my VIP Glamour Heels?  No need to fret, fellow fashionistas!  I am going to give you three different tips to help style these born again heels into forget-me-not ensembles!

How to Wear VIP Glamour Heels:

  • Girls Just Wanna’ Have Fun!:  Pair a ravishingly colored floral skirt with a solid hue tee and then add your VIP Glamour Heels for a striking combination that says “Girls Just Wanna’ Have Fun!”- Oh, girls just wanna have fu-un. Oh, girls just wanna have fun. (*Fade Music*)
  • I Love Rock N’ Roll: Rolled up jeans and a graphic or band tee work harmoniously with VIP Glamour Heels! This ensemble will give you a laid-back weekend look with a rocker’s edge. I love rock n’ roll so put another dime in the jukebox baby. I love rock n’ roll, so, come and take your time to dance with me! (*Fade Music*)
  • Flash Dance!: Dance your way into a wonderful ensemble! Pair your VIP Glamour Heels with cropped leggings and an oversized sweatshirt with the collar cut out for an outfit that will leave you singing “What a feeling, bein’ believin’. I can have it all. Now, I’m dancing for my life!” (*Exit Stage Left*)

Shout out to my dear, sweet, precious, jewelry artisan, Lisa Hamilton of Beadsoul! She recently created a hand stamped “stay FABULOUS” ring for me (as seen above). Along with it, A super adorable wing necklace with a little pearl! Go check out Beadsoul on Etsy, order yourself something directly from her shop or order something personalized, and tell her the VIP sent you:)

I also want to give a shout of to the pocketbook savvy DIYer-Mark Montano! His YouTube channel and facebook page are filled with creative ideas that any crafter or fashionista would love! VIP Glamour heels got their inspiration from Mark Montano’s creative ways of upcycling!

1964 Flashback

My grandmother in 1964, age 16.

“Well, shake it up, baby, now (Shake it up, baby). Twist and shout (Twist and shout). C’mon c’mon, c’mon, c’mon, baby, now (Come on baby).  Come on and work it on out (Work it on out)”  Woah…Hey there…how embarrassing….Anyway….Did you know that the number one hit song in 1964 was Twist and Shout by The Beatles?  What a great song!  It is definitely one of those songs you get your hairbrush microphone and sing it at the top of your lungs.  I am sure all of you…most of you…some of you… are wondering why I am talking about 1964…well, the special event I have been mentioning lately has something to do with it…the dress pictured above is the exact same frock I will be wearing to an exclusive MAC event this Saturday in Trussville, Alabama!  Whooo!  Yes, feel the excitement!

My grammy (on left) and my great-grandmother (on right)

After chatting with my grammy, (Yes…I renamed her because as the fourth grandchild…I never got the chance to give her a name of my own *sniff*)… After chatting with my Maw Maw–I mean Grammy, I decided to learn more about 1964.  Another smashing hit (just so you guys know…I said that in a British accent…speaking of  British accents-Sir Sean Connery as James Bond in Goldfinger was quite the hottie…these days…he is positively the cutiest  little old man ever!  I will end this random babble with…”Bond, James Bond.”)  Back to the smashing hit I was telling you about…Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison…that song is so catchy…(speaking of catchy!  Richard Gere was quite the catch *wink* in the movie Pretty Woman!)…I don’t remember what I was going to say…I’m jamming out to the music of 1964, and I lost my train of thought…

My grammy and her dad…Don’t you just love going through old pictures? I do…

I apologize for my digression…Time to get back on topic! After all my research, the apparel of the 60s was indeed diverse.  There is not enough time today  for me to discuss this topic, but I am almost certain that I will return to it in later blogs!  I wanted to wear my grammy’s dress because of the way the dress poofs out and makes me feel like a 1960s princess…Actually, I thought it would be totally freaking rad!

My grammy was 16 when she first wore the pink dress. well looky there, I am 16! Was this planned… hmmm…we’ll never know…

The custom-made, fabricated by hand frock (no sewing machine was harmed in the making of this dress.) was worn at some relative’s wedding…(I was…checking…my twitter…yes, my twitter…when my grammy was telling me who it was…sorry Maw Maw…) The dress is based on a size 14 pattern, but back then the sizes were different.

V.I.P. Shopping Tip: When shopping for vintage, it is important to know that clothes back in the “good ole’ days” were much smaller than they are today…For example–a size 14 could possibly fit a person who wears a 4/6 today….Don’t focus on the label size; otherwise, you might miss out on a spectacular find!

Once again…there I go…off on another random tanget… I don’t know what’s wrong with me today, but I have the inability to stay focused because I am so excited about wearing a dress from 1964 to the MAC event.

Of course, I will not be wearing it in the exact same way my grammy did…I am going to spice it up a little!  80s meets 60s is what I shall call it!  It is vintage with added pops of color and Jessica Simpson shoes…what girl doesn’t love Jessica Simpson shoes!  This is just a sneak peak…I pinky promise to post pictures of the entire ensemble…because to be honest that dress isn’t the easiest thing to put on in the world…lots of little buttons, zippers, and whatnots…

Next time, I will be sharing with you one of my favorite places to find vintage…or I may just randomly talk about bunnies (yes…bunnies…bunnies in vintage hats!).

Be sure to subsribe to my blog via email so you can instantly receive updates.  To check out my random tangets, follow me on twitter @Abbysauce_ and on Instagram @vintagepassionista
