Weekly Whistle: Hippie at Heart

IMG_3728
Ever since I can remember, I have been head-over-heels for the hippie era of fashion. The wardrobe pieces, the accessories, the hair, and the makeup are all so effortless and elegant in this oddly-romantic, slightly-rebelling-against-tradition way. Oh, y’all–I’m telling you the flow and the funk is so empowering + I am a sucker for pieces with killer sleeves *wink*

So, for this week’s Weekly Whistle, I am throwing it back to the sixties and seventies with a little bell-sleeve and bell-bottom action. I absolutely adore this outfit because not only is it practical for my new #CampusLife *wink*, but it is also trendy and classic. When combined with the lariat necklace (worn as a headband) from Beauty In Stone, I feel like I just hopped in a fashionable time machine.

Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at this week’s Weekly Whistle + outfit details

  • Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a 27 year old jewelry artisan and fashion blogger living in Thessaloniki, Greece.  I love everything related to art, fashion, crafts, vintage and traveling.  I also love cooking; however, I’m still working on it!  I have studied economics, but I never truly loved it.  I started making jewelry about eight years ago.  The driving force for that occupation [jewelry making] was my love for art and fashion.  For the last two years, making jewelry has been my main job.  I still cannot believe what I was dreaming of as a little girl has actually become reality!

  • How would you describe your personal style?

Mmm…I can’t describe it with only one word…my outfits depend on my mood!  I love retro style, hippie, and sometimes minimal.  I love Aztec prints, geometric prints, polka dots, stripes, colors and bold jewelry.  I really enjoy mixing and matching different styles!

18

  • When you are not making jewelry, what do you enjoy doing?

Too many things!  First of all, I enjoy going out with my friends for drinks, coffee, and so forth.  I love to write my blog Style En Mi Opinion[http://styleenmiopinion.blogspot.com/]!  I also write for other blogs and magazines.  I am a fashion writer for four blogs in my city.  I enjoy dancing, even alone at home!  I like to go in flea markets and discover little treasures.  Finally, I looove shopping!  Is there anyone who doesn’t?

  • Tell us about your blog, Style En Mi Opinion.

My blog, Style En Mi Opinion, recently turned three years old.  It’s a way for me to express my style, personality, and passion about style and fashion.  My blog is also a way to promote my creations.  I wish I could shoot better photos and have more time to write consistently.  What I love about blogging is being able to meet people from all over the world that have my same interests…I love having that connection with so many different people!  Oh!  Last, but not least, I know it sounds silly…but I LOVE WHEN I GET AWARDS! :)

15
  • Describe your typical day.

My typical day starts when I wake up at 10:00.  Then, I eat my breakfast, which is usually toast.  Next, I drink my coffee and smoke the first cigarette while I am blogging.  If I have a jewelry order, I go to my workshop and get to work!  If there is no order, I usually go out for several other obligations.  During the afternoon, I go to the coffee shop with one of my friends to chat and hang out.  When I return home, I go back to my PC.

17

  • Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

Oh, sooo many!  Let’s start with…hmm…Pull & Bear, Anthropologie, and Forever 21.   I also shop at many local boutiques and vintage bazaars.

10

  • Who or what inspired you to become a jewelry maker and fashion blogger?

Since my childhood, I have read fashion magazines–Vogue, Elle, and so forth.

I have always believed that style is what matters…not just being a fashion victim.  I have always experimented on my outfits.
As for jewelry, I am and have been obsessed with it.  I was constantly admiring all the jewelry designers…so when I was about 20 years old…with a whole closet full of accessories, I realized that is something that I really love! So,  I started making jewelry.  I am self-taught  because I believe that institutes limit the imagination.
6
  • Who or what inspires your jewelry pieces?

Oh! Inspiration is everywhere!

…from various cultures from all over the world.  For example, my summer 2012 collection was African-style inspired.

People are also a great source of inspiration!  Frida Kahlo, Iris Apfel, as also every day people’s street style.
I can also be inspired by the material itself.
  • VIP QUESTION: What is one item in your closet you could never get rid of and why?

Mmm…there are many items that I can’t rid of…

One is my Henrik Vibskov cashmere black and white coat.  It’s super stylish, comfortable and soft.  I bought it last Christmas from a wonderful boutique in Amsterdam.

  • What else would you like my readers to know about you and your jewelry?

My latest obsession is the Japanese culture.  I would love to make a trip to Tokyo!

16

Oh, my goodness!  Don’t you just love learning more about jewelry artisans…I know I do!  It makes their pieces that much more fabulous and interesting!  Sofi creates such spectacular pieces of jewelry art…colorful, unique, and absolutely awesome!  Oh, aren’t y’all super ready to shop Sofi Moukidou Jewellery right now?!

V.I.P Interview: Raspberry Beret Consignment Shop

The Raspberry Beret: A Consignment Shop

The Raspberry Beret (“She wore a raspberry beret, the kind you find in a second hand store. Raspberry beret, if it was warm she wouldn’t wear much more…Purple rain, purple rain, I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain…Cause I get delirious (delirious), delirious (delirious), delirious (delirious)…’cause they say two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time. So tonight I’m gonna party like its 1999. I was dreaming when I wrote this…” Did I tell you guys that I did a 4th grade project on Minnesota…and Prince is from Minnesota!…) Anyway…back on topic. The Raspberry Beret is a marvelous consignment shop located in Louisville, Mississippi. Sara Chapman, the owner, has such fabulous style that I just had to share with y’all my interview with her because Sara is quite the fashionista.

Sara Chapman and me! I told you, she has great style!

  • Share with us a brief bio about yourself.

I graduated from Grace Christian in 2004 and attended Mississippi College for a year and Mississippi State University for a year and a half. I never had a career goal in college for myself so when a position became avaliable at Lake Forest Ranch in 2007, we took it. I stayed at Lake Forest Ranch until the beginning of 2010 when I decided to open up the Raspberry Beret (March 2010).

  • What made you want to open up a consignment shop?

I love shopping at thrift and consignment stores. I love the hunt, the deals, and giving things a second life. I saw a need for a well-organized more upscale version of a thrift store in Louisville, and I decided to take a risk, providing a place where people can get great deals as well as make a little extra cash.

  • Why did you name your store Raspberry Beret?

It’s funny, my husband actually came up with the name one day while sitting on the porch…about a year before I opened the store. We knew we had to come up with something catchy that people would remember, and he thought of The Raspberry Beret- which comes from the Prince song that goes- “She wore a raspberry beret, the kind you find at a second hand store.”

Painted by Faith Spann, who has artwork for sale in Sara's shop.
  • How would you describe your personal style?

My style has definitely evolved over the years, from trendy to hippie-to retro-to classic-to where I am now-kind of a mix of all of them.

  • Who inspires you?

I draw inspiration not from any particular person. I see things I like, and I store them away in my head…but I rarely see outfits or room decor set up as I like it. I like to mix things up, but I have a passion for all things old because they have a history.

The Raspberry Beret has a nice selection of clothes that appeals to every age.
  • What is the favorite part about your job?

Being the owner has perks, but it also carries huge responsibility. I would have to say that my favorite part is combing through the items people bring me and finding a real gem that I buy myself.

You can create a completely new look for yourself at The Raspberry Beret. Everything from clothes and shoes to belts and accessories!
  • What are your favorite hobbies?

I don’t have a lot of hobbies. I used to make jewelry- refashioning old pieces into new electic ones, but owning a business takes up most of my time now. Other than that, I like to relax with my husband and dogs.

  • Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

I love most thrift and consignment stores, but I do shop retail some. I love JCrew and Urban Outfitters.

You can find almost anything your heart desires at The Raspberry Beret...
  • Do you have any thrifty fashion tips?

Be daring. Most people don’t think they can pull something off, but 90% of it is confidence. I have learned over the years though that buying quality is better than quantity.

Check out The Raspberry Beret on facebook!

Sara and I picked out some timeless, trendy outfits to show all my readers that it’s easy create a new spring look for a reasonable price by being thrifty:) The pictures shown below are the outfits we put together.

I can imagine it with different accessories, colorful belts, and Jessica Simpson shoes...Look for solid dresses in white or black because they are easy to accesorize!
White pants are classic. The possibilities are limitless!
Coral is a hot color for spring. Love coral, white, turquoise. I'm feeling like a beach trip...
This outfit that Sara put together is gorgeous! She loves mixing patterns together.
This is a JCrew shirt with the tag still on it! I liked this outfit so much, I bought it for myself!
Is there any better time than spring/summer for a cut-off pair of denim shorts...love it when they are frayed with holes!

It has been so much fun getting to know Sara Chapman! I wanted to share with you all a few things coming up in March: Beatles Poster DIY, Vintage Inspiration, and me revealing my new hair color! I don’t want to go into much detail and ruin all the suprises…so stay tuned to the Vintage Inspired Passionista blog:)
