Beauty Tues: Kicking Off the #VIPBeautyJournal with June’s Nail Color

Hello, fabulouses, and welcome to Beauty Tues!

I am no makeup or nail artist, and I think it is safe to say that. I have had many, many #BeautyFails throughout my years of using makeup and polish. Bless! I still have not perfected–like liquid eyeliner and nail-painting *wink*

So, instead of trying to be something I am not, I decided to create the #VIPBeautyJournal to talk about my favorite eyeshadows, lipsticks, nail polishes, and all that jazz through an outlet that is a little less Greek to me–sketching and journaling!

I filled the first page of my #VIPBeautyJournal with cute doodles + the VIP’s June 2015 nail color of the month–Gamma-Ray Burst from Drip Drop Nail Paint. I also added some FABULOUS neon stars for a little pop of fun! My favorite thing about Gamma-Ray Burst is IT GLOWS IN THE DARK. Yes, that’s right–you heard me! It is nail polish that glows in the dark! How ah-mazing is that *wink* I tried to capture a photograph of the journal in the dark…but I epically failed because I am no photographer either *wink*

If you are head-over-heels for this glow polish, be sure to check out Drip Drop Nail Paint to see the entire glow nail collection! *gasp* So cool!

What is your favorite nail color for June? Join in on the VIP Beauty Journal fun by hashtagging #VIPBeautyJournal on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook! Also, don’t forget to mention Vintage Inspired Passionista Blog on Facebook and @AbbyHathorn on Twitter/Instagram so we can make sure we see your fabulous beauty journal entries! :)

Stay Fabulous,

Abby Hathorn

Throwback Thursday: This Time Last Year…

Hello, fabulouses, and welcome back to the blog!

Phew…today has been quite work-filled. After my morning bike ride around downtown, I jumped head-first into my apartment patio project–leveling ground, adding sand, laying concrete stepping stones, adding marble rock, and ruining a perfectly good manicure–all while Ziva played with the leftover sand and my photographer snapped a few candid shots. Stay tuned to VIP home in July to see photos from the process + the final product.

Now, back to today’s blog topic–Throwback Thursday. In celebration of June coming to an end, let’s take a look back at what the VIP was doing this time last year…Oh, it’s hard to believe how much has changed in just a year! Time really does fly when your having fun, enjoying life, and following dreams *wink*

This time last year, the VIP was getting dolled up by the fabulous makeup artist Daphne Rush for the "VIP Signature Curls" photo shoot with Hot Tools and Matrix products.

Life Is a High-Wire

Abby_056 bw copy

I admit that I did not watch the live version.  To be honest, I wasn’t really interested in it.  For some reason, I watched the re-run of Nik Wallenda’s walk across the Grand Canyon on Discovery. Perhaps I was too lazy to look for the remote…or was I divinely inspired?

It was so touching to see Nik walk courageously across the canyons while praying in the name of Jesus Christ–giving Him all of the glory.  He wasn’t afraid to speak His name…He wasn’t worried about what the press or the critics would say…He was focused on his mission…his dream.

Did Nik Wallenda wake up one day, make a few calls, and walk across the Grand Canyon?  No.  Years of training and practice prepared him to make that brave journey.

Most of us are not training to walk a high-wire across one of the world’s greatest wonders; however, we are walking the high-wire of life.  One step at a time.  Leaning left.  Leaning right.  Kneeling for a rest as we take in the sights around us.

My blog began as an outlet–a way to express myself.  I confess that I did not know how to fix my hair or makeup or pose like a model…but with the help of fashion magazines, YouTube tutorials, practice, encouragement from family, friends, and fans…my look and confidence evolved.

I learned that others loved my natural curls which up until my blog had been an albatross.  The more I blogged–the more I embraced those curls.  I cannot tell you how many of my classmates and teachers told me to straighten my hair…that I would be prettier with straight hair…I know that deep down they all meant well…but it hurt.  My hair is naturally curly.  I tried many times to straighten it…damaged it severely with a flat iron…because I wanted to be accepted…I wanted to be pretty…like all the girls with straight hair.

Long story–short.  I started to love myself–I started to love everything about myself–inside and out. No, the journey of becoming a confident teenager was not an easy one.

I had to go against what is deemed the “norm”–teenagers being teenagers…I have no other way to explain the norm.  Sadly, there are too many teenagers out there taking  pictures of themselves to get attention from anyone and everyone–not thinking about the future–not thinking about being positive examples–not thinking about WWJD (What Would Jesus Do)….They are just acting without inhibition…without care…without conscience.

This takes me back to the “Entangled by the Norm” post….

After a lot of soul-searching and Bible study, I realized that I love the person God made me.  I love what I am doing.  I have a desire…a passion…a dream…to motivate and encourage my fellow teenagers and even adults.  One does not have to follow the renowned quote of Robert Frost and take the common road or the road less traveled by–No.  Work hard to create your own path.

It will not be easy.  There will be successes.  There will be failures.  There will be joy.  There will be tears.  There will be struggles.  It will take hard work…practice after practice. Yes, you will have to practice…just like Nik Wallenda.  Will it all be worth it?  Absolutely!

Prepare for the critics because they will be there…waiting for failure.  Prepare for the naysayers because they will be there …waiting for a weak moment.  Prepare for the meanies, prepare for the bullies, prepare for the envious…because they will all be there…waiting….Me–I am going to take a little advice from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs–to whistle while I work–tuning them all out.

Phew…I see that I am getting long-winded–my parents say I have always been terrible about that…anyway, life is a high-wire…we must lean left, lean right, kneel for a rest, and give Jesus Christ all of the glory.  I am glad that I was too lazy to look for the remote…and I am so thankful for the ways that God inspires me.

Stay Fabulous,

Abby Hathorn

VIP Signature Curls with Hot Tools and Matrix Products!

Hello, my fabulouses! I had the most fabulous modeling photo shoot EVER thanks to Detra Smith, hair stylist for the shoot, and Daphne Rush, MUA for the shoot. Before I show all of the magnificent pictures…let me tell you a little bit about Daphne and Detra!

Who is Daphne Rush?

Daphne Rush is a makeup artist in the Birmingham area. She currently works full time for Smashbox Cosmetics as an account coordinator and artistry trainer. In addition to that, she serves on the board of directors for the Association of Independent Artists (AIA) and is currently the Best Makeup Artist for Birmingham Fashion Week. She eats, sleeps, and breathes makeup 24/7–when she isn’t in-store for Smashbox, she is making brides beautiful, on set for a photo shoot, or collaborating on projects for publication. She got her start at Sephora, and after making the National Pro Beauty Team, she traveled internationally in 2009-2010. After that, Daphne left to pursue her own business, Birmingham Beauties. She began embracing the education side of makeup artistry by teaching everything from private lessons to interactive group tutorials known as Makeup By Numbers. While freelancing for Tarte cosmetics in 2011, she was recruited for her current position with Smashbox. The fusion of education and camera ready products made Smashbox a perfect fit, and allowed her artistry the momentum that it continues to have today.” (Daphne Rush’s bio.)

Who is Detra Smith?

“I wear many hats in the salon industry. As Artistic Director at Helen of Troy, one of my responsibilities is to style models for Hot Tools advertising.  I also write step-by-step guides to teach consumers how to use their styling tools.  As an artistic educator for Matrix, my responsibility is to teach other stylists how to achieve the best possible color results in their salons.  As a salon owner, I have many guests who ask how to maintain frizz with curly hair.  After meeting the VIP [Vintage Inspired Passionista–Abby Hathorn], I knew she would be the perfect step-by-step model to help others learn to manage their curls.”
After winning top stylist at BFW [Birmingham Fashion Week], I became a lead board member of the Association of Independent Artists.  I meet regularly at AIA The Salon with Jeremy Stephens, Daphne Rush and others on the board.  Jeremy is generous enough to allow me access to his salon anytime I’m working in the Birmingham area.”

How did Detra Smith make my curls ever so luscious and frizz free?

“I used Matrix V-Light to touch up Abby’s highlights.  Next, I used the Matrix Total Results Super Defrizz Gel–it is my favorite product to define curls while taming frizz. The Hot Tools Tempest 2000 Blow Dryer comes with the finger diffuser that Abby used to dry her hair while keeping the curls controlled and smooth.  The curling iron I recommend for touch ups is the Hot Tools 1” Professional Spring Iron,” says Detra Smith.
The Matrix Defrizz Gel, Hot Tools hair dryer with finger diffuser, and the Hot Tools 1” Professional Spring Iron is the most fabulous mix for any girl wanting to tame her natural curls.

VIP Personal Testimony:

Oh, I cannot explain how much I love the Hot Tools Tempest 2000 Hair Dryer and finger diffuser! I was very impressed how the Hot Tools Tempest 2000 dried my hair thoroughly and so quickly–AND without frizzing! Wow! I could not believe my eyes when I saw no frizz!  I admit that the VIP was skeptical because I have tried and owned several different hair diffusers–and by the time my hair was dry, my blonde curls looked like a giant frizz ball.  After only one use, I had fallen head over heels for Hot Tools!
For those pesky strands of curls that do not want to cooperate–the one inch Hot Tools Professional Spring Iron is beyond amazing! Some days, fixing my signature curls is a stressful task, but with Hot Tools and the Matrix hair gel, styling my hair has never been so easy and fast!
Now, without further ado, I introduce to y’all the fabulous photo shoot pictures! Special thanks to Detra Smith and Daphne Rush for making me look so totally FABULOUS! Another super special thanks to Bella Bridesmaid for letting the VIP wear their lovely dresses and model at the super gorgeous Bella Bridesmaid shop!
