Weekly Whistle: Funky Fine Pair of (Vintage) Levi’s Jeans

Lately, I have been listening to A LOT of 80s music–Genesis, ZZ Top, Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Joan Jett and the list goes on and on. So, naturally, I have been in like a totally rad, neon pink, acid wash and Miami Vice mood *said in my best Valley Girl voice*

When the winter storm hit last week and dumped about 9 inches of snow, my photographer and I took the opportunity to take some awesome outfit photos for the blog. As I was pulling items for the photoshoot, I stumbled upon a pair of funky fine (vintage) Levi’s *cue ZZ Top’s Cheap Sunglasses* that I had TOTALLY forgotten about.

In my 80s state of mind, I embraced the crazy, yellow acid-wash denim and decided to create a wearable wildcard outfit for this week’s Weekly Whistle. In the word’s of my photographer, “Wow…well, Abby–it sure it bright.” *wink*

Now, without further ado, get your 80s groove thang on and check out this week’s Weekly Whistle + outfit details! Also, be sure to pay special, close attention to the fabulous handmade bracelets!

An Addition to My Shoe Addiction

Hello, my dear fashionistas! I think it is time for me to have an intervention…is that usually how that kind of thing goes? Do I submit myself for such? Oh, well…it doesn’t matter because it is highly unlikely that I will change…Anyway…Today, I am going to chat about a fabulous addition to my shoe family! Hi, my name is Abby Hathorn, and I am a fashionista who is obsessed with shoes….

I am so in love with my new lovely summer sandals from Gus Mayer! They are so bright, so unique, and so…ADORABLE! Check out two ways I wore these delightful Circus by Sam Edelman shoes on my blog yesterday! Click here for a direct link.

On Instagram, I posted a photo of ALL of my shoes as I was “summer cleaning” my closet. Many of my followers were humored at the fact I had posed (sans makeup) with the stacked boxes just to show how tall they were. Now…before anyone freaks out, I must add that I am only 5’2″…Anyway, the Instagram caption is true….I don’t have a shoe addiction…nope…nuh uh…not me…not this gal!

Okay….perhaps the Instagram caption was an untruth….maybe I should go to shoeaholics anonymous. Hi, my name is Abby Hathorn, and I have a serious shoe addiction…

BUT, hey….You have to admit that these super sassy summer sandals are completely AWESOME! Get a pair like the VIP at Gus Mayer in Birmingham, Alabama! www.gusmayer.com

Noteworthy Neon

“When the sky gets dark enough to see the colors of the city lights. A trail of ruby red and diamond white…tonight she’s out to lose herself and find a high on Peachtree Street…She comes and goes like no one cares….she’s always buzzing just like neon, neon. Neon, neon…” John Mayer surely knows how to sing it! Mmmm…my kind of eye candy-he loves neon and has the voice of an angel! Yum!

“She’s always buzzing, just like neon, neon, neon, neon…”

A sheer, neon yellow frock is divine when paired with neon skinny belts and flashy stilettos! This ensemble is perfect for dancing the night away while looking totally fabulous! Create a casual look by simply accessorizing a neon dress with sleek black jewelry and classic black wedges. Such style is great for getting that cute co-workers attention at a classy office party!

Neon and vintage, oh my! You cannot get any better than that! Sport a purple knee length vintage skirt with a neon yellow chiffon blouse and sky-high stilettos for a stellar vibe that is sure to capture everyone’s attention! Step up this ensemble with a lovely pair of vibrant statement earrings and a spunky watch for a look that is spectacular for dinner with your best friends to a date night out on the town!

“Pretty woman, walking down the street. Pretty woman, the kind I’d like to meet…” Ooo la la, pretty woman in pink! Work a floor length, neon pink skirt with a throwback acid wash denim button up and studded toe black flats for a look that is totally awesome and spunky. Take this ensemble to the next level by frosting your neck with black rhinestoned statement necklaces for a look that is totally rad for a rocking the night away at a local concert or karaoke!

  • Awesome Accessorizing!:  “Hot pink, citron yellow, and lime green shades seem to be everywhere this season, but if you’re a little color shy, this trend would be an intimidating one…,” says collegefashion.net. No need to fear the color, fashionistas! Instead of going full out neon-on-neon, add pops of brights in at the waist or with a cute colorful clutch and rock the street in super style!
  • Opposites Attract.:  In the world of hues, neon and black are complete opposites! Wearing super sleek black accessories with brilliantly bright neon pieces is a daring look that is terrific for all occasions!
  • Cute Colorblock!:  “Colorblocking has been big for a few seasons now, so naturally pairing one neon piece with another is a great way to wear this trend.” (collegefashion.net) Wear a neon-on-neon ensemble with rhinestone jewelry, simple neutral flats, and funky belts for a style that is casual chic perfection!

Shopping in Your Own Closet: Denim with a Splash of Neon

Hello, hello, hello, fashionistas! What about that Super Bowl yesterday? I am not a huge football fan; however, that was quite the interesting game! A power surge in the stadium, Beyoncé, and funny commercials-perfect way to spend Super Bowl Sunday (given that I spent most of the day in Nike shorts and a sweatshirt-fashionistas deserve to a lazy day too!) Anyway…we all know I am not here to talk sports! If I were…it would go something like this: Kick off, linebacker, quarterback, touchdown, go team go, cheer, chant, cheer, swing batter, batter, swing, homerun! Okay, now you all know why I am not a sports blogger haha! So, let’s get down to business! It is time to see what magnificent ensemble the VIP styled while shopping in her own closet!

As I was organizing my newly renovated closet…Yes, our house is still under construction, but the mess makes for fabulous pictures! I do not know what I am going to do when we actually finish the house…hmm…Anyway, as I was organizing my newly renovated closet, I stumbled upon a terrific pair of denim trousers! I had forgotten all about them during the move! So, without further ado, I introduce the VIP’s closet shopping ensemble! Whoo hoo!

VIP Accessories Challenge: Vintage High Waisted Shorts

This week we are going on an Accessories Challenge adventure together.  What is an Accessories Challenge, you ask?  Well, it is where the VIP (that’s me) takes one outfit and gives it three different looks by changing only a few accessories. Accessorizing involves more than putting on earrings, tossing on a necklace, and piling on bracelets. Oh, my sweet readers, it’s much more! Imagine (Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can…you may say I’m a dreamer-oh, I’m sorry for bursting out into song.  I just love the Beatles!)-oh, yes, imagine the limitless possibilities of your wardrobe when you expand it with hats, belts, scarves, shoes, and even legging.  I agree that it’s a bit warm for scarves and leggings, but it’s never too hot for hats and belts!

For this Accessories Challenge, I chose a pair of vintage, sky blue, high-waist shorts from The Attic in Columbus and a white, lace top from The Limited.  By keeping the “basic” outfit simple and neutral in color, I was able to jazz it up for my summer events.  Each transformation has been paired with a hat because hats are a great way to hide frizzy hair-thank you, Southern humidity and ridiculous heat!  Inevitably, a bad hair day always strikes when we need to go somewhere important.  So, keep those hair accessories handy!

Have you ever had a bridal shower brunch, an outing at the mall with friends, and an evening party or night out on the town-with no time to change-ALL on the same day?  Well, that’s where accessories can make all the difference! Pack a few pairs of shoes, hats, and pieces of jewelry that coordinate with the events of your extremely busy day along with some Smart Water and granola snacks into your emergency beauty bag-then get ready to wow friends and strangers alike with your fashion genius!  I guarantee you will look fabulous without breaking a sweat; however, I cannot guarantee you won’t sweat-after all, it is 100 degrees-in the shade.

Hat: World Market (Birmingham, Alabama)
Top: The Limited (Birmingham, Alabama)
Belt: Betsey Johnson (TJ Maxx-Trussville, Alabama)
Shorts: The Attic (Columbus, Mississippi)
Shoes: Jessica Simpson (Belk-Trussville, Alabama)

For a bridal shower brunch, I decided to pair the vintage shorts and lace top with a floppy, summer hat, cobalt blue Jessica Simpson heels, and a neutral colored bow belt by Betsey Johnson.  This look is cute and dressy which is perfect for any special occasion, especially a luncheon or brunch.

Top: The Limited
Belt: JCrew
Shorts: The Attic
Shoes: Converse

Next stop is the mall with friends.  I wanted to be comfortable, yet cute. How did I go from bridal shower dressy to comfy cute? You guessed it!  I changed my accessories.  I simply pulled out patterned high-top Converse, a tie belt from JCrew, and a funky hat by Blu Getrude from my handy dandy emergency beauty bag.  This outfit also works well with Keds, Sperry’s, or a cute pair of metallic sandals.

Hat: Blu Gertude (Deeo South Pout in Columbus, MS)
Top: The Limited
Belt: Target
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Finally, the sun has set, but the outfit must keep shining because there is a hot, summer party in the city (Hot in the city, hot in the city tonight…hot in the city-I apologize for my digression, but that Billy Idol song just fits). Once again, reach into that magical emergency bag full of splendid accessories, Smart Water, and granola wrappers, and pull out neon Jessica Simpson heels, a bright pink belt, and a funky headband.  Now, get ready to party the night away while looking absolutely fabulous!  Neon accessories are suitable for summer parties or a day out on the town-you cannot have enough neon accessories this summer!

Accessories are SO important!  They can change the overall look of any outfit with very little effort.  Just keep the five tips on pairing, buying, and picking out accessories in mind the next time you find yourself with too many events and too little time.

VIP Accessory Tips:

  • Making a Statement:  Invest in statement jewelry such as a pair of funky Blu Gertrude earrings or a pair of neon heels.  Do NOT be afraid to stand out and make a statement.  Be you and express your style!
  • Quantity: Your local Claire’s or other accessory shops are wonderful ways to get more bang for your buck.  Take advantage of sales and buy bracelets and necklaces in bulk!
  • Variety: Make sure you have style variation in your jewelry box and closet. Classic pearls, neon bangles, floral patterned heels, vintage hats…variety is key!
  • Hats: Invest in hats for the summer!  You can purchase an adorable, floppy hat from the CosMedi Center that makes you look fabulous with the bonus of protecting your precious face from the sun.
  • Not Too Much: If you want to wear an “arm party” (which is a variety of bracelets/watches combined on each arm), do not wear necklaces or big, flashy earrings because that is too much accessorizing.  You want to make a statement-not look like Mr. T from the A-Team.  Don’t get me wrong-I love Mr. T and the A-Team.
